Before you cruise, check out the site Yachtdestinations.org for the most up to date information regarding the clubs that we enjoy reciprocal privileges with. There you will find far more information than we have room for in our printed membership book.
How about downloading podcasts on your favorite subject, sailing? The January issue of 48 Degrees North has good descriptions of available podcasts starting on page 49. https://48north.com/the-magazine/ The subjects are innumerable, from cruising in far away places, diesel mechanics, to sail trim. Why not try them all to see which ones you like?
I suggest that we consider unofficially adopting, and then flying the Bellingham flag on our boats. The symbolism is as follows:
A blue half circle on the left of the flag, representing Bellingham Bay to the west, when the flag is flown horizontally.
- Two white, four-sided stars inside the half circle, representing Lummi Nation and the Nooksack Indian Tribe.
- Three wavy white lines between the stars, representing noisy waters, “which is the translation of the word Whatcom, that comes to us from the Nooksack people” and refers to the mouth of Whatcom Creek.
- And lastly, four green stripes, in two shades, representing the four cities that joined to become Bellingham: Whatcom, Sehome, Bellingham and Fairhaven.
People hoping to get their hands on a flag have a few ways to do so.
There are flag stickers, patches, and other items for sale at a variety of places such as Penny Lane Antique Mall, Hardware Sales, Novato Shop & Studio, Third Planet, The Comics Place, and The Lucky Monkey.
People also can buy flags and patches online at BellinghamFlag.bigcartel.com and find information at BellinghamFlag.com.
Yacht Destinations
CYC Bellingham has reciprocity agreements with 110 yacht clubs. They include many of your favorite sailing destinations in the Salish Sea, but also locations in Oregon, California and Hawaii for those venturing further afield. Each club has their own conditions for reciprocity which you should investigate prior to your visit. “But how do I find this information,” you ask? “Can there really be one spot that contains such a wealth of data?” The answer to all your CYC Bellingham reciprocity questions can be found at Yacht Destinations.

Our club and those with whom we have reciprocal relationships utilizes Yacht Destinations. If you haven’t already, create an account by providing a user name and password. Select DETAILS from the menu bar to get a list of CYC reciprocal clubs. Make sure that VIEW ONLY MY CLUB’S RECIPROCALS is selected. Select the MAP icon to get a satellite view of the destination. Most importantly select the INFO icon to get details about mooring location, contact information, and specifics on using the moorage. A hard copy of the information can be printed using the PRINT icon. An example of a printed information page is shown for Brownsville Yacht Club.

When making your slip available for reciprocal moorage, please do the following:
- Please fill out the Vacancy notice and place it in tube on dockbox. (cycvacancynotice.pdf)
- Place the AVAILABLE sign into its holder at entrance to your slip.
- You may want to remove and store docklines and power cords.
- It would be a good idea to inform your neighbor or another member when you expect to return.
Thank you for participating in this program.

Reciprocity Chair
If you are a CYC member, please follow these guidelines:
- Fly the CYC Burgee!
- Have your current membership card.
- Check with Harbor Master, or at the Clubhouse, or follow instructions provided on signs or bulletin boards posted by the club you wish to visit.
- When in doubt, ask--yacht club members are usually friendly & courteous, and will normally help if they can.
- You are strongly encouraged to leave a thank you note when you depart or mail one to the reciprocating club when you return home.
Remember that your CYC Membership entitles you to a 10% discount at both Redden and LFS. You need to show your card when you make your purchase. Redden applies the discount to everything, whereas LFS is more selective. For a double bonus, buy something for your wife with the savings.
If you are using Seaview, or Colony Wharf boat yards, remember to thank them for their donations that they give to us every year. Seems like that whenever we ask, they are happy to donate a haul out. In fact, when you come to the meeting, you will have the opportunity to bid on a haul out, and the proceeds will go to the Community Boating Center.
Slips MW47 and MW48 are available, and although they are not "official" CYC slips, they are adjacent to our other slips. Note MW48 is an upwind slip, starboard tie.
I encourage everyone to have a dockside note card taped to a window with the following information:
Your boat name
For emergencies regarding this vessel please contact:
Your name: Xxx Xxxxx, Phone #: XXX-XXXX
Alt name: Xxx Xxxxx, Phone #: XXX-XXXX
Harbormaster: 676 2542
After hours security: 739 8131
Did you know that our club pays an annual subscription fee of $100 to use the Yacht Destinations website? And yet, only 14 of our members have completed the free registration. This site is the go to site if you want to ascertain which of the 117 clubs we have reciprocal privileges with, as well as all of their contact information. What are you waiting for? Sign up today!
